Understanding Potential Side Effects of Ovarian Cancer Radiation

Like any cancer treatment, radiation therapy can cause side effects. These depend on the area being treated, the dose of radiation, and the individual's overall health. Common side effects for radiation to the pelvic or abdominal area may include:


  • Gastrointestinal Issues: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and changes in bowel habits. These are often temporary.

  • Urinary Symptoms: Increased frequency of urination, burning or discomfort during urination, and bladder irritation.

  • Fatigue: A general feeling of tiredness and lack of energy, which can persist for weeks after treatment.

  • Skin Changes: Redness, dryness, itching, or peeling in the treated area, similar to a sunburn.

  • Reproductive System Effects: Vaginal dryness, narrowing, or scarring; temporary or permanent infertility (if ovaries are still present and irradiated).

Most side effects are manageable with medication and supportive care. Long-term side effects are less common but can include chronic bowel changes or, very rarely, the development of a secondary cancer many years later.
